Spring Equinox Ritual

Hello dear ones,

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, spring is in the air. With the March 20, 2025 Spring Equinox, the days are getting longer and the light is increasing. Equinox means balance (balance between day and night, light and darkness, matter and spirit..) After coming into balance, the tendency in the other direction begins. In the spring equinox, there is a transition from winter to spring, from darkness, from the womb, the seed to light, marking the beginning of the awakening of nature and of us. I would like to share with you a ritual that we can practice on the day of the equinox (day or night time of March 20th). The theme is rebirth, opening a new page and entering into it (or jumping into it like an easter bunny :), by letting go of all the vicious cycles that create obstacles and blockages and do not contribute to our holistic health and joyful ascension.

EQUINOX RITUAL

Requirements:

– A white candle and a yellow candle. Let the white candle represent our purification /cleansing and ascension, and the yellow the increasing physical and spiritual light.

– Paper and pen

We sit cross-legged. Our spine is straight and relaxed. We face Northwest if possible. We light the candles with intention.

We calm our breaths and write down on paper all the vicious cycle patterns that are preventing us from reaching our most ideal version, all the patterns from which we aim to be completely and fully free: all the emotional patterns, thought patterns and behaviors from which we want to liberated. We put all of them down. After the ritual, we can leave this paper in the sea, in flowing water or bury it in the ground.

Now, putting the pen and paper aside, we close our eyes, smile and slowly calm our breath. With each breath, our body relaxes more and more, giving itself more and more to the ground, to Mother Earth. We feel that Mother Earth loves and supports us unconditionally. As we continue to keep our spine erect, we gracefully drop all our weight to the ground. Now we imagine the most ideal version of ourselves and begin to enter into it. We can imagine a day in the life of this ideal version of ourselves. How did we wake up in the morning, how is our energy, how did we go about our day, what is the geography where we live, what kind of home, place is it, who are we with? What is our occupation, vocation or job? Do we travel and to where and for what? Are there any collaborative projects, with whom and what are they? Visualize them in full detail and feel them with your 5 senses. If it is a seaside geography, let the salt, smell and wind of the sea come to your face… The smell and green of the forest…

Now with each breath, we take in the frequencies of this ideal version of ourselves, and in each exhalation we let go of the frequencies, false belief patterns, vicious cycles that do not contribute to the realization of this version of ourselves, that create obstacles, burdens and blockages to this.

I breathe in “I am now my ideal version” I breathe out “I let go and ground of all the vicious cycles, all obstacles and blockages.”

We can stay in this state for as long as we wish and then end the ritual with thanking and gratitude.

We can write our experience on another piece of paper. We can do this ritual for 7 or 21 days and write down our experiences. We would be very happy if you share your experiences with us below in comments. May we be healed and enter our ideal versions immediately fully.

Being (like) Water, Staying in Movement

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.
Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

01 03 2023

The first blog of the new year is on being (like) water and staying in movement. So let us begin.

On the 4th Week of my MBSR: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program, we cover the topic “What is Stress?” The chapter of the MBSR Handbook on Stress has the preceding quote from Tao Te Ching. In nature, life, universe, all beings are in constant motion. Electrons are always on the go, planets keep revolving and moving, each cell of our bodies vibrate and are in contact with every other cell..In one of my walks here in Berlin, near a lake, when I saw the silent clear movement of the current in part of the lake, this is what came to my mind. It flows but/and does not hurry. It stays in movement, in harmony with its surrounding..

In ancient traditions of wisdom, nature is observed with care because nature reveals the secret workings of the universe. Among the wisdom of water and the water element are its fluidity (ability to flow with ease), ability to continue its existence and to BE in multiple forms/phases, to reflect clearly what is as is, to keep the memory of the Earth and the Universe, to cleanse and its soft power. If we calmly and carefully observe water, she can teach us these qualities.

How does water keep in movement? By not resisting and continuing to find its way. When water meets a rock, water does not stop and complain “why this rock, why me, what to do now..” It does not worry either. It flows on top of the rock and around it. If it can’t continue above ground, it enters underground and keeps on flowing. And with its soft power, transforms the rocks with whom it comes into contact. One day that rock becomes a smooth pebble in our palm.

What else is there to water: there is the storm on the water and its clarity.. There might be a fierce storm on the surface of the water (another example of the power of water in combination with air), but/and at the same time the waters deep down are calm and silent. Just as we have the calm and still Essence underneath all the intense emotions that storm through us. Dear Thich Nhat Hanh (Dear Thay) calls this unchanging still place “the island within.” He reminds us that we can connect to and take refuge in this island whenever we want to and can come back from the past or future to the present moment and back to balance. Why do we hurry and worry then, why do storms overtake us? Cause we are not mindful of the truth that the universe, life, our life and all emotions and thoughts are in constant movement. Through grasping and holding on to thoughts, emotions, our views on life, our life and views of ourselves and more, we slow down, freze their movement and prolong the storm.

Harvard University neuroscientist Dr. Jill Bolte says that the chemical and physiological lifetime of an emotion in the body is 90 seconds and anything beyond this becomes choice. Meaning, any emotion will last up to 90 seconds (chemically and physiologically) and we could breath through it, count the seconds and then the mind and body could continue its movement. Yet how come we stay in the same emotion (emotional mood), especially in intense negative emotions, not for 90 seconds but for hrs and sometimes for days? Because the emotion arises simultaneously with a thought, and with that thought or a second one we feed that emotion and possibly add other intense emotions to it. For example say we became angry at something or someone, and with the emotion came immediately the thought “but it is always me who gets the short end of the stick” and so came more anger, maybe some sadness and self-pity. Then came another thought and a feeling and the whole thing became a bundle.

What is the alternative? Being conscious of the emotion felt, recognizing and accepting it (there is anger/sadness/fear right now in my body), as well as recognizing the thoughts and bodily reactions that came with this emotion and either allowing its expression in a wholesome way (possibly not while under its full spell but in a calmer time), or observing this emotion-thought-body pattern really well and working on its transformation over time. These can allow the intense feelings to flow more easily through the body and the mind, allow us to come back to balance quicker, and allow the movement to continue.. This way the emotions will not be locked in the body either.

And what does still/calm water teach us? To see what is as is. Still waters reflect the skies and underwater as they are, without judgement, without commentary. Sees/comprehends what IS clearly and reflects/expresses it clearly. Isn’t it fascinating dear friends?

And so, let us please approach and contact water with love and respect. Observe water in all its phases, in different times, different seasons, in different landscapes. In love and respect we can ask water and its guides to support us in the qualities we need to nourish in ourselves.

Now and always, may we flow like water, may we BE water.

Autumn 2022 Trainings

MBSR: Mindfulness based stress reduction program

Autumn is the season to harvest the fruits of our labor of last year and start letting go.. Trees shed their leaves and start pulling all their energy inward. Winter is the time to go fully in, reflect, contemplate, and gather energy for the rebirth in Spring.
In our upcoming trainings, we will use these energies of Autumn and Winter to recognize and let go of the patterns that do not serve us and learn ways to calm the mind and heart and to deal better with stress.
You can complete both MBSR Training and the One Day Retreat as Fortbildung (Professional Training). VHS will provide Certificate of Attendance.

Heartful Contemplation of the Week

14.02.2022

Today is Valentine’s Day.. But many of us now call it the Day of Love.. May we live each day, each moment, each second, feeling, receiving and transmitting pure love and compassion in breath, intention, thought, body and action..

So, honoring this day of love and loving, I wanted to offer “hugging meditation” as a practice. It is a practice introduced by dear Thay (Thich Nhat Hanh). I have not yet written about him, his teachings and my contact with them yet. For the time being, it is brewing in my heart and soul. The sharing will come I am sure at the right moment. Dear Thich Nhat Hanh who was an actual Zen Master, never called himself that and preferred to be called Thay (Teacher) by his students. In my understanding, he gave the world two main gifts: one was having Buddhism that was engaged in the world affairs (in social justice) with complete presence, equanimity and compassion. The second one was his adaptation of many of the Zen Buddhist teachings into everyday life of the West, be it in the form of songs, readings, little practice verses (Gatas) or calligraphy all in the local languages, in secular form, and doing so without oversimplifying the teachings. So he made Buddhist teachings, their core wisdom, accessible in secular form and easy to practice in everyday practice and transmitted these in elegance, beauty, wisdom and compassion. This kind of teaching /sharing with elegance and metaphor can also be seen in Zen paintings, calligraphy and architecture. The transmission of ideas is done using less of the logical mind and actually overriding the logical mind through metaphor, intuition, with the help of riddles as well. It is why for example the Japanese adore with deep love and respect Sakura, the cherry blossoms. Because Sakura is a beautiful, elegant reminder of transience, of impermenance.. The flowers bloom in full beauty and generosity (with no holding back), to be seen, touched, loved in full presence, till they are gone with the first rains.

It is from Dear Thich Nhat Hanh and Dipa Ma (an Indian woman Buddhist master), that I learned the everyday applications of teachings. Dipa Ma, a mother and wife herself, taught many householder women how to practice mindfulness while doing housework, breastfeeding and taking care of children. Meditation and mindfulness is not after all only to be practiced on the meditation cushion or during mindful movements like yoga, qiqong but, while these continue, one can keep expanding the awareness, a kind focus or compassionate awareness to many activities of every day life as we can.. As my MBSR teacher Wolfgang Schröder had said, mindfulness is like islands -I am thinking of volcanic islands in the sea :) –  and initially one or two pops up.. but as you keep practicing, more pop up and they become an Archipelago.. :)

Beautiful Calligraphy by Dear Thich Nhat Hanh

One of the everyday practices introduced by dear Thich Nhat Hanh is hugging meditation. He said that he introduced it based on his own life experience. While in the U.S., a woman practitioner had invited him to a city to lecture and then I think as he was leaving (or maybe when he arrived), she wanted to give him a hug. Being a monk and also not used to hugging, dear Thay found himself becoming very rigid in the embrace. But being a good practitioner who says “no mud, no lotus” and that transforming suffering and difficulty into compassion and understanding is always possible, he created a meditation out of this life experience, to be able to let go and be fully present in a hug.

How do we do it? We have our partner in crime :). A person, an animal friend, a tree friend to hug. Of course with each one, it is best to ask their willingness for a hug (same for trees and animal friends and children and adults)..

Then we recognize the presence of our beloved with love and joy and bow to them, or bow to each other. Then we take three long joyful conscious breaths to come fully to this moment (of connection). Then we open our arms and hug the person, tree, animal friend, holding each other in the gentle embrace for 3 inbreaths and 3 outbreaths. In the first breath, we are aware that we are present in this moment and we are happy. (“I am here with you, I am so happy”). With the second breath, we are aware that the other person, animal friend, tree is present in this moment, and we are again very happy that it is so. (“You are here with me, I am so happy”). In the third breath, we are aware that we are here together, right now on this earth and in this moment together, and we are happy as well. (“We are both here, I am so happy and grateful”). We may then release each other and bow and thank them.

Dear Thich Nhat Hanh says, the best thing we can give a loved one is our presence. If you are not there, you can’t love and if you are fully present with the other, what a gift it is.. Hugging meditation can be used to rejoice in our connection with a loved one in full presence as well as for reconciliation and healing. In Covid times, many of us got afraid (and were advised not) to make human contact, to hug and to kiss.. It was very difficult for most of us. A close friend of mine who went abroad during the time said she really missed hugs. I shared with her that if hugging people were not possible, maybe we can hug trees in the meantime. Here is a video the musician Tom Rosenthal made during Covid times. He asked people to send him videoclips of their hugs and 600 responded. Here is the very touching videoclip of this.

I hope you try this short and joyful meditation many times this week. And if so, please leave a comment below.

You can find here the description of hugging meditation and more practices at the Plum Village website.  Here, brother Phap Lai from Plum Village guides children in this meditation.

May all my intentions, thoughts, feelings and actions arise and take place in pure love, compassion and gratitude, now and always.

Heartful Contemplation of the Week

7.02.2022

Welcome to another Heartful Contemplation of the week.

This week, the invitation is to use the energy of Winter to reflect gently and joyfully on what needs attending to in ourselves ..

Ancient cultures lived more in tune with the rhythms of nature, learning great wisdom from the cycles, strategies, ways of being of animals, plants, mountains, seas, clouds and stars.. Taoism is one among many of those traditions. In Qiqong that is based on Taoism, there are animal forms of movement / being (e.g. tiger, dragon, turtle, crane, snake, etc) all of which are associated with certain seasons, elements, organs, energy, and movement.

Winter is a time for going inward.. After harvest time (when the produce is harvested and stored), the pace slows down. Trees shed their leaves and draw their energy inward, some animals go into hybernation, the earth rests to recuperate while supporting seeds underneath. While nature is going inward and collecting her energy, we modern or postmodern :) humans, keep running around. Our bodies, minds, souls may give us signals to slow down, rest, recollect, yet aside from the allowed times of Christmas and New Year breaks, we keep rushing as usual.

Nature Does Not Hurry, Yet Everything Is Accomplished. – Lao Tzu

We are approaching the early beginnings of Spring. Last week, on 02 02 2022, the day of the Celtic Festival of Imbolc (celebrating light and hope), with my dear friend and colleague Orla O’Sullivan, we guided the workshop Noble friendship with the Body: A Springtime Session to nourish peace, healing and hope. With a great group of people from Turkey, Italy and Germany, we reflected on our relationship to our bodies and shared on beginning anew with our bodies with the upcoming Spring.

Before full-fledged entry into Spring, the invitation for this week is to reflect first on Winter. If the winter supports going inward, reflecting and recollecting our energies, this week’s heartful contemplation becomes asking ourselves “what needs attending to in me this winter, right now?” Tending is a word (and a verb :)) I love, cause it has “attending to” as directing one’s attention / focus to something but with great gentleness, in a tender and delicate way.. Reminds me of the Little Prince and his rose..

People where you live,” the little prince said, “grow five thousand roses in one garden… Yet they don’t find what they’re looking for… And yet what they’re looking for could be found in a single rose.
The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

His rose was unique and he tended to her with love and care; he missed his rose when he came to Earth.

If you bring this kind, compassionate focus to yourself (to your mind, body, energetic body, our relationships, your home and work, your relationship to the community and to the planet), what calls out to you that needs some caring?

exercise

We may pause now, come back to our breathing (deep breath in, slow breath out…), have a smile on our lips, if it feels good, put our hand on our heart or lower belly, turn the attention inward and ask:

-What does my body need to be ready for Spring, to be rejuvenated, for beginning anew?: How do my different organs and my spine feel right now? How can I care for them? What happens when I smile to my organs, to my spine, thank them and ask if they have any messages for me, for the whole?

-What kind of tending is needed for my mind? What thoughts, emotions, need tending to? How can I tend to them? What are the negative seeds in my consciousness (thoughts and feelings that lead to unwholesome actions and take away my energy) that need tending? What are the positive seeds that I can nourish and prepare for Spring (thoughts, feelings that lead to wholesome acts and bring me and others energy, joy, love and compassion)?

-What about my energy? What needs attending to, for my life energy to be balanced and vibrant?
-Am I in right relationship with the Earth? What needs tending to in my relationships to loved ones, friends, colleagues, to community, to MotherEarth?

You may keep on asking these questions on different days of the week, different times of day and collect the insights..

Imagine how a little seed is protected under the earth and it gets all the nourishment of the earth, the minerals, the rains, some warmth of the sun.. It needs all its energy to grow and go with full force to the pearce the earth and come out. So do we (need thi energy to start fresh). With deep looking, becoming aware of what needs tending and what conditions of tending each part exactly needs, we can create the conditions of nourishment for our minds, bodies, souls and energy to be able to flourish with new ideas, to allow for inspiration..

May we all have a nourishing week ahead. Please share your experiences below.

Heartful Contemplation of the Week

24.01.2022

This week onwards, I invite us to begin each week together with a heartful (sister term of mindful :)) contemplation. Take in the words, the concepts, and put it in our hearts to simmer through the week. Let us discover together what gifts we receive on this through the week.. We may smile and collect the insights that come our way on the theme, caught by surprise at the synchronicity at times..

I offer “interbeing” or “interdependent existence” as this week’s contemplation, represented here by the beautiful calligraphy and inspired by the teachings of dear Thay (Thitch Nhat Hahn) who left his bodily form on January 22, 2022. It is with a deep bow of respect and gratitude to him and his teachings, I share this.

We inter-are is the term Thay (Thitch Nhat Hahn) created in English. We inter-are with all other life forms. We inter-are with the beautiful planet, with MotherEarth, the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars. This is not a symbolic reference but is fact. Our bodies exist because many stars were formed and bloomed and died.. We carry the star traces within us, in our cells and DNA.

Each of us are formed by non-“self” parts.. Ayşe can “be” because of her parents, ancestors, stars, the Sun that shined on the food she eats, the minerals and vitamins that nourish her body, the bird that left the seed in the earth and the farmer that watered it.. Take out the parents, any of the ancestors, the Sun, the bird, the farmer, the water, the minerals and vitamins, Ayşe “is not” any more. Each breath Ayşe takes is co-breathed by other people, animals, the trees, forms clouds and becomes rain and perhaps comes back as tea.. So it is with each of us..

Let us ponder together all the ways we inter-are with life forms and lifeless forms, to cut the illusion of separateness, loneliness, and an independent “self.” Many of our quite human and humane afflictions, like social media dependency (on the level of addiction :)), or dependency within and to relationships might arise because of notions of loneliness, of separateness. The invitation is to contemplate heartfully joyfully this week all the very concrete ways of co-existence, of oneness. Please share your comments, insights and experiences here.

Re-membering & Honoring my Sacred Feminine

For ages, women and femininity have been suppressed and mistreated by the patriarchal systems that still dominate most cultures. For some time though we see the whole world and our GAIA -MotherEarth- going through a change, a shift that is bringing back the power to the Sacred Feminine that it deserves while leading to a redefinition of the masculine.

Starting on September 11, 2023 and continuing every monday for 8 weeks (10:00 am-12:30 pm), we will gather in women’s healing circle in Berlin, Mitte. The circle is offered as a “course” in VHS-Mitte 10115 Berlin, Linienstr. 162. Schedule is in the link below.

The circle is open to all who self-define as women. This is a collective exploration of our femininity, with an aim to liberate our minds and bodies of the cultural notions of shame, guilt, imperfection, limited expression in the world, and to discover and reconnect to our Sacred Femininity, to the ancient wisdom of our bodies and sexuality and create new ways of being that are more healing, balanced and whole.

We started the circle in Spring 2023. We will now continue our exploration in Fall 2023 on gender, historical degradation of the feminine, body image, childbirth, menstruation, motherhood, communication/expression and close with the session on re-membering and reuniting with the Sacred Feminine.

Will you join us?

Meeting Autumn in Holistic Health & Balance Workshops

The Taoist system and many Eastern systems understand the workings of the Cosmos, nature and our physical-energetic bodies through the 5 elements. In the 5 elements system, each season is associated with an element, a certain color, certain nourishment, with paired yin & yang organs and emotions.

In this workshop, using healing sounds qiqong, to help transition into Autumn, we will work with the Fire element of Summer and the Earth element of Indian Summer, and their accompanying organs and emotions of the Heart & Small Intestine (Summer) and Stomach & Spleen (Indian Summer) which may need re-balancing in these times. We will follow this by a joyful practice of walking meditation which will help us re-connect to Earth, to ground. Walking meditation is a great technique to move from the mind to the body, from thoughts to presence, and to deal with difficult emotions.

In line with all qiqong and meditative practices and with the main mission of Orca Dreams, the aim here is to learn ways to reach and maintain our holistic health, our inner balance. Healing (and balance) start from inside out. You can register to one or more of these in-person workshops in the beautiful sunny days of Berlin.

First Turkish MBSR Course in Germany

In October 2021, Dr. Ayşe Dayı will be giving an MBSR: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course in Turkish in the VHS: Volkshochschule Berlin Mitte. Based on our research, to our knowledge, this will be the first MBSR Course in Turkish in Germany where a large community of Turkish (and Kurdish) speaking people from Turkey live.  Ayşe has been giving MBSR Courses in Turkish since November 2020, but these had been online courses due to the pandemie. This will be the first course face to face course after the normalization period.

You can see the announcement of the course on the webpage of the MBSR-MBCT Teachers Association of Germany (Verband der Achtsamkeitslehrenden MBSR-MBCT) of which Ayşe is a member. The Turkish MBSR courses will contribute to the pluralistic richness of the MBSR-MBCT courses given in (m)other tongues in Germany. In the databank of the MBSR-MBCT Teachers Association, you can find courses in German, in Croatian, Dutch, English, French, Luxembourgish and Spanish that are offered online or in your area.

For detailed info on this specific course, please visit VHS’s course site. And do check out Courses and Programs links for upcoming MBSR and other courses on mindfulness and for mindfulness workshops. By filling out the “Institutional Request Form” that exists on Contact page, you can also request a course/workshop/program for your group or institution that can be custom-tailored to meet your specific needs.

Hayatı Bir Dağ Gibi Karşılıyorum / Meeting life as a Mountain (Turkish)

This meditation was recorded as part of the Qiqong and Meditation courses I started at the beginning of the Pandemie in March 2020 and continued every Sunday morning online till July 2020. The aim was to return to and maintain balance in mind-body-energy and to show solidarity with those who experienced financial hardship during the Pandemie. With a wonderful group of participants, we met each Sunday morning online, de-stressed, connected and came back to balance, and sent the donations for the course to individuals and groups in need.
